Turkey calls Austria the ‘capital of radical racism’

The Ankara government has also been angered by media reports in the European country suggesting the coup was actually orchestrated by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

On Thursday, an Istanbul court issued an arrest warrant for the exiled cleric Fethullah Gülen, stating he had ordered the coup.

Mr. Erdogan has lashed out at the USA and Europe, accusing them of failing to denounce the coup-although the European Union swiftly said it stood firmly with Turkey’s democratic institutions and government. Erdogan has called for the extradition of Gulen, who denies involvement in the plot.

A rogue faction within the military tried to wrest control of the country on July 15, launching attacks on parliament and the president’s palace.

Tens of thousands of people have been detained and thousands more have been dismissed following the attempted coup.

He was reacting to a demand by Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern for a halt in talks with Turkey.

But Juncker told German public broadcaster ARD that Turkey is now unfit to become a member of the European Union, in comments that could further strain relations between Ankara and the bloc it is seeking to join after a failed military coup.

“There is no alternative – even if it is hard in these times – to return to a direct dialogue with Turkey”. Accession talks are “an open-ended process”, she added. Facing claims from the Leave campaign that Turkish accession could spur millions of its citizens to come to the United Kingdom, former Prime Minister David Cameron, who made closer Turkish ties a priority upon taking office in 2010, declared it would take decades for Turkey to become a member.

“Turkey can not be a member of the European Union in its current state, and especially not if it decided, as some have warned, to reinstate the death penalty. That would lead to the immediate breaking off of negotiations”, he warned.

A senior ruling party official says nations need to take action against schools or other establishments linked to a movement led by US -based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Turkey accuses of instigating the failed July 15 military coup.

Turkey has urged the European Union to grant visa-free travel to Turks wishing to visit the Schengen zone, covering most of Europe.

Last week, Juncker, speaking to Austrian newspaper Kurier, said: “The risk is great”.
