Turkish authorities also arrested 10 members of the Council of State, the country’s top administrative court, and are searching for 140 members of the court of cassation in a probe related to the failed overnight coup, broadcaster NTV reported.
– At around 11:00 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Friday, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim denounces an attempt to overthrow the government after bridges over the Bosphorus Strait were partially blocked by soldiers in Istanbul. Turks across the political spectrum, including the main opposition parties that represent secular Turks, nationalists and Kurds, opposed the coup. They have protected the democracy.
Istanbul’s town hall was just one symbol of Turkish President Tayyip Recep Erdogan’s government to be attacked in the attempted coup. The embassy said it is still hearing reports of sporadic gunfire around the airport. He told them: “They have pointed the people’s guns against the people. They never resulted in any positive outcome, and this one will certainly not bring any peace right away, but hopefully the government will use it in a positive way to reconcile the country”, Eskicioğlu said.
In a statement on Saturday, the White House said President Obama “reiterated the United States’ unwavering support for the democratically-elected, civilian Government of Turkey”.
– Acting army chief of staff, General Umit Dundar, announces that the attempted putsch has been defeated.
“Citizens are gathering near the People’s mosque of Bestepe at the presidential complex to protect democracy after the coup attempt by a group of betrayers, who are members of FETO/PDY (Fethullahist Terrorist Organization/Parallel State Structure) has failed”, the statement said. “We are a democratic country and we should sort our problems in the ballot boxes”.
“Now I’m addressing those in Pennsylvania”. The betrayal you have shown to this nation and to this community, that’s enough. Some, including KLM and Singapore, had flights enroute to Istanbul when the coup attempt happened that turned back to their home countries.
“I hope these traitors in the coup attempt will receive the most severe punishment”, Hicarcikoglu said. Either arrest Fethullah Gulen or return him to Turkey.
Y. Alp Aslandogan of the New York-based Alliance for Shared Values, a group that promotes Gulen’s ideas, denied the claims.
Kerry also said that USA military cooperation with its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally has been unaffected by the turmoil. “We condemn any military intervention in domestic politics of Turkey”.
A number of world leaders and the top officials of the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation earlier declared their support for the democratically elected government and president.
“The United States views with gravest concern events unfolding in Turkey”.
