Bases of Hamas’ military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, as well as of two smaller militant groups were hit, the security officials said.
Israeli army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner said in a statement that the military “remains committed to the stability of the region and operated in order to bring quiet to the people of southern Israel”.
“Israeli new ultra-right Minister of Defense, Avigdor Lieberman, is flexing his muscles at the expense of Gaza’s residents”, Elizabeth Tsurkov, Research Fellow at the Forum for Regional Thinking, said in a tweet commenting on the recent airstrikes.
Israel holds Hamas, which controls Gaza, responsible for all attacks emanating from the territory.
Under the agreement approved Saturday, Turkey will drop legal claims against the Israeli military and individual officers and soldiers who were part of the Mavi Marmara raid.
Turkey and Israel reached an agreement last month to end a six-year rift caused by a naval raid on a Turkish aid ship trying to breach the blockade of Gaza.
The Turkish prime minister’s comments came several hours after a similar condemnation of Israel from the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
It also added that despite the reconciliation deal, it would “not keep silent in the face of attacks against the Palestinian people”.
Fourteen rockets have been fired into Israel from Gaza so far in 2016, according to the IDF.
They said it struck an area “between two buildings on a road” of the city, located less than four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the coastal enclave. Meanwhile, Hamas, the terrorist organization that runs Gaza, blamed Israel for the escalation in the South.
