Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the normalisation of relations between his country and Turkey will help the two countries find effective solutions to the Syrian crisis.

“It is our greatest and irrevocable goal: Developing good relations with Syria and Iraq, and all our neighbours that surround the Mediterranean and the Black Sea”, Yildirim said, in comments broadcast live on television.

Turkey has always been one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s staunchest opponents, arguing that only his departure could stabilise Syria.

“We of course want to normalise our relations with Egypt but it’s perhaps a must for the [military] coup regime that shelved democracy and chucked it out to examine its actions”, he said.

“For the fight against terrorism to succeed stability needs to return to Syria and Iraq”, he added.

The influx of Turkish aid into Gaza comes within the context of a deal signed late last month between Turkey and Israel in which the two agreed to restore diplomatic relations following a six-year hiatus. Officials have insisted those moves do not mark a broader foreign policy shift for Ankara. The report also points out that the harm the economies of both countries would face due to Russia’s policies following Turkey’s downing of its jet will soon be replaced by mutual profits after the problem is overcome.
