“Turkey will not allow any step aimed at violating its borders”, Turkish Premier Ahmet Davutoglu said on Thursday in Baku during a joint press conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev upon the end of their talks.

However, after the temporary suspension of the TurkStream energy project, between Turkey and Russia, and the threat of the Russian President Vladimir Putin that more sanctions against Turkey are about to come, the Turkish government tries to enhance ties with other energy export-oriented countries.

Davutoglu stressed Turkey was ready to discuss every possible issue with Russian Federation except for “the borders of the Republic of Turkey or its right to independence”.

“So, we attach much importance to three mechanisms; Turkey-Azerbaijan-Georgia, Turkey-Azerbaijan-Iran and Turkey-Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan”, he added.

Turkey was originally expected to get TANAP gas in 2018.

“But we also need to know that it can not go like this forever”, he said. In this context, as the Prime Minister who will be in power in Turkey for the next four years, I want to say that we’ll be always nearby with Azerbaijan.

As Turkey is an energy-dependent country and meets about 92 percent of its oil and 98 percent of its natural gas demand through imports, Azerbaijan with its vast hydrocarbon reserves in the Caspian region, is strategically important.
