Turkey, Russia agree to build Syria mechanism: Turkey FM
On the issue of support for the Turkish government after the failed coup, the statement added: “The NATO Secretary General spoke to the Turkish Foreign Minister on the night of the attempted coup and later with President Erdogan, strongly condemning the attempted coup and reiterating full support for Turkey’s democratic institutions”.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said Wednesday Turkey’s membership of the military alliance is “not in question” following the failed coup in July and stressed its “very clear position” of continued support for Ankara.
Relations between Brussels and Ankara have become increasingly strained since Turkey launched a crackdown, imprisoning and dismissing tens of thousands within the military, judiciary and education in the wake of the putsch which it has blamed on US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen.
Ankara has expressed astonishment that no European Union official has visited Turkey in the wake of the coup.
The formation of the mechanism was agreed during President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.
Russian Federation and Turkey will resume strategic partnership after the recent crisis in relations, Paul Levin, director at Stockholm University Institute for Turkish Studies, believes.
Recent reports in the Turkish media, picked up and amplified by the Russian press, have blasted Turkey’s allies for their lukewarm condemnation of the coup attempt and suggested that they may even have had a hand in it.
NATO’s high command has been forced to deny Turkey’s membership is in doubt, with a spokesperson insisting Ankara remained a close partner and its membership of the 28-member group was “not in question”. The meeting fueled speculation that Turkey’s strong relationship with the West could be weakening.
“We are building a strong mechanism with Russian Federation regarding Syria, ” Cavusoglu said.
