Turkey’s Erdogan says USA has ‘no excuse’ to keep Gulen
Erdogan was speaking after talks with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden about Turkey’s extradition request for Fethullah Gulen, who has lived in exile in the United States since 1999. Biden called the coup’s perpetrators “terrorists”, reflecting Erdogan’s language, and said, “I wish I could have been here earlier”.

Biden also commented on the ongoing Turkish military operation into Syria, telling Syrian Kurdish forces they “must move back across the Euphrates River” if they hope to continue to receive US support.
“The American people stand with you”, Biden told reporters, sitting next to Erdogan at the presidential palace in Ankara.
“If the process can be sped up for (Gulen) to be returned to our country in order to be punished, if our cooperation in this regard continues to grow, then the Turkish people’s sorrow, its disappointment in this regard will quickly give way to positive sentiments”, Yildirim said.
Turkey is both a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member and part of the United States coalition in the fight against IS in Syria and Iraq. He said Gulen “should be taken into pre-trial detention” by the USA, in part to prevent him from being interviewed by journalists, and is “currently managing and directing a terrorist organization where he lives”.
Biden also rejected suggestions that the US government knew about plans for a coup in advance.
“But we need to meet legal standard requirement under our law”, adding that it would be an “impeachable offense” for President Obama to deliver Gulen without going through the USA justice system.
Biden said that the prime minister, the foreign minister and others had made it clear they would adhere to constitutional principles and that the rule of law would prevail.
In a joint news conference with Biden after their meeting, Erdogan said Turkey had already sent case files covering Gulen’s alleged criminal activities prior to the July 15 coup.
He also warned that President Barack Obama won’t intervene in the extradition process. Biden said the United States had no interest in protecting anyone who had done harm to an ally, and that Washington offered unwavering support to Turkey in the wake of the failed coup. But he reaffirmed the USA willingness to cooperate in the case of the US -based Muslim cleric, Fethullah Gulen.
Instead of dismissing those theories as rumour, Biden addressed them head-on in a news conference after meeting the Turkish prime minister in Ankara.
He says US legal experts are working with Turkish officials to gather and evaluate the evidence that would have to be supplied to USA courts in order to win the extradition of Gulen to Turkey.
However, the rebelling servicemen started to surrender July 16 and Turkish authorities said the coup attempt failed. The effort has raised significant human rights concerns.
“Let’s give them some time”. Hours before Biden arrived, Turkey launched a major offensive against the militant group in Syria, meant as much to deter further advances by Syrian Kurds allied with Turkish separatists as to inflict damage on the jihadist group.
