Turkey says 19 migrants drown after boat capsizes
Eleven migrants bound for European Union member Greece, including three children, drowned off the Turkish coast on Tuesday when their boat sank in the latest tragedy in the Aegean Sea, the state-run Anatolia news agency said.

A total of 15 people were rescued while two remain missing.
More than one million migrants and refugees reached Europe this year, including over 970,000 who made the risky journey across the Mediterranean, the United Nations refugee agency said Tuesday.
Thursday’s deaths are the third in as many days between Turkey’s southwestern coast and nearby Greek islands and coincides with falling temperatures and rougher seas.
The UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) says the number of refugees and migrants fleeing to Europe in 2015 has topped an unprecedented one million.
Germany alone has received a million refugees and migrants this year, although many were already within Europe, particularly in the Balkans. The route from Turkey to Greece across the Mediterranean Sea has become “the deadliest route for migrants on our planet”, according to the UN.
Almost 3,700 people fleeing from Africa and the Middle East have died trying to cross the Mediterranean in the previous year, and another 150,000 have been rescued from sea disasters by the Italians, according to Italy’s Minister of Transportation, Graziano Delrio.
Greek police said on Wednesday that at least 13 people, including seven children, drowned when their boat sank in the Aegean.
Greece was by far the most popular point of entry, with more than 820,000 migrants arriving there.
“If we are creative in using our visa policies to give temporary protective status to everyone so there is a measure of support there… then I think it is a manageable proposition”, he said.
At the same time, UNHCR continues to call for safe, regular ways for refugees to find safety through more resettlement and humanitarian admission programmes.
Compared to Canada, the USA plans to admit 10,000 refugees from Syria during the 2016 fiscal year.
At least 3,692 migrants died this year during the voyage, the IMO says, and a growing number of the fatalities are among children or infants.

In exchange, Turkey is to crack down on migrants leaving for Greece. The global community’s response must address both root causes and the needs of people caught up in the resulting migration – we need to support people in both the long and the short term.
