Turkey and Iran have held opposing positions on Syria, with Iran backing the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad and Turkey advocating his departure.

A Turkish delegation held talks in Russia on Thursday aiming at coordination on Syria and other bilateral issues following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s first meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin since Turkey shot down a Russian fighter plane a year ago.

Cavusoglu made the comment at a joint news conference with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif in Ankara.

Cavusoglu said that cooperation between Russian Federation and Turkey on politics, military and intelligence will pave the way to put bilateral relations on a solid ground and help resolve problems in Syria.

Earlier, Zarif and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held talks about key bilateral, regional and worldwide issues.

Both countries “wanted to protect the territorial integrity of Syria and that Syrian people must determine their own future”, he said. “We’re thinking that, we must stand against ISIS and al-Nusra’s extremism together”.

Analysts have speculated Moscow and Tehran may be looking for more harmony with Turkey on Syria following Erdogan’s trip to Russian Federation.

The ministers said they intend to expand trade between the two neighbors, including through the possible increase of natural gas sales to Turkey and more visits by Iranian tourists.

“For permanent peace and a solution in Syria, we’ll strengthen our cooperation”. “We had disagreements over some issues”, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkey’s foreign minister, told reporters.

He said Ankara had information that some had fled to other countries using different means including air travel in the weeks after a rogue military faction tried to remove Erdogan from power on July 15.
