Turkey seeks United Nations meeting over Turkmens in Syria

Turkey has shot down a fighter jet close to its border with Syria, it has emerged.

An unidentified jet was shot down on the Syrian-Turkish border, according to footage aired Tuesday by a Turkish private broadcaster Haberturk TV.

Prime Minister Ahmed Davutoglu is holding an urgent conference with the senior officials of the general staff over the incident.

According to CNN Turk, images posted to social media showed two pilots parachuting safely to the ground.

“Everything should be done to avoid any damage, any casualties to civilians and it should be done within worldwide law”, United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in response to an Anadolu Agency question on recent attacks by Russian Federation and Syrian regime forces on Turkmen-populated areas in northwestern Syria. Clashes between the opposition and Syria’s government troops are underway in the area.

There have been reports that the jet was Russian, however this has not yet been confirmed through official channels.
