US Justice and State Department officials will fly to Turkey to investigate accusations against cleric Fethullah Gulen that Ankara says masterminded an attempted military coup in the country in July. On July 15, an attempted coup took place in Turkey and was suppressed the following day.

Turkey’s government has repeatedly said the deadly plot, which martyred at least 246 people and injured more than 2,000 others, was organized by followers of US -based preacher Fethullah Gulen. USA leaders were incensed when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused the United States of either supporting or backing the coup.

Yildirim said the coup has prompted a restructuring of Turkey’s intelligence services, adding that both its domestic and foreign intelligence services will be strengthened and placed under one umbrella organization.

“There is a treaty, an extradition treaty that’s been on the books between the United States and Turkey for more than 30 years”, he noted.

With President Erdogan warning the U.S. has to decide between Gulen and them, the Justice Department has agreed to send its own team to Turkey to conduct its own probe into the allegations and try to find some evidence.

During the course of Cavusoglu ‘s visit, the External Affairs Ministry and the Turkish Foreign Affairs Ministry finalised a road map for cooperation between the two countries in a wide variety of fields in the coming years.

Earnest said some U.S. Justice Department officials will travel to Turkey this week to review some of the evidence they have collected.

“Turkey is clearly frustrated with what it sees as European leaders’ failure to recognize the deep impact of the coup on Turkish society”, Jagland noted.
