Eight Turkish soldiers were killed in clashes with Kurdish militants in the country’s restive southeast, the army said Saturday, raising the toll from the deadliest such attack on the military since the failed coup.
The terrorists were killed during airstrikes against three groups attempting to infiltrate into Beybuta Hill Military Base Region in Yüksekova district.
Military officials say the overnight attack came hours after clashes between soldiers and militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in Cukurca that left eight soldiers dead. 23 were killed in airstrikes, while 4 others were killed in ground operations.
Since then, almost 600 security personnel, including troops, police officers and village guards have been martyred and more than 5,000 PKK terrorists killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq.
The injured were immediately taken to hospitals in Cukurca and Hakkari.

The Turkish military has frequently carried out air strikes in the area in recent months after a 2-1/2-year ceasefire and peace process between the government and the PKK broke down last summer.
