Following the deployment, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi demanded the withdrawal of the Turkish troops, sent into the Bashiqa camp without Baghdad’s approval.
Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil Al Arabi attended the meeting, held at the pan-Arab organisation’s headquarters. “We view Iraq’s concerns as legitimate, and we support its position to the end”.
Turkey deployed around 150 troops to the Bashiqa area earlier this month with the stated aim of training an Iraqi militia to fight ISIL.
Iraq says it will give Turkey a few days to withdraw but warned that it is willing to escalate its actions.
Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic said on Saturday that the Arab League stance shows that it does not fully understand the importance of Ankara’s efforts against Daesh.
Turkey has reacted to the Arab League’s condemnation of Turkish troops’ deployment in northern Iraq, claiming that the military presence in the war-torn Arab country is aimed at countering threats posed by the Takfiri Daesh terrorists in the region.
Arab foreign ministers condemned on Thursday a Turkish military deployment in Iraq as an “assault” on the country’s sovereignty, demanding Ankara withdraw the forces.
“The government has announced that it does not want participation of any troops, except the Iraqi ones, in the liberation of Mosul”.

Arab League deputy chief Ahmed Ben Heli read out the statement at a press conference, in which he added that the Turkish troops ‘increased tumult in the region’.
