Turkish troops, 1 police killed in new PKK attacks

A senior commander in the Kurdistan’s Workers’ Party, or PKK, called on the group’s fighters on Tuesday to refrain from targeting soldiers and security forces who are not directly involved in the conflict between the PKK and the Turkish state.

Alkan had made the comments during the funeral ceremony of his younger brother Captain Ali Alkan, who was killed in an attack by PKK militants in southeast Turkey early on Saturday. The incident comes as fallout of the decision by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to continue military operations against the PKK until its disarmament.

Two Turkish soldiers were killed and three wounded on Monday when the vehicle they were traveling in hit explosives buried in the road, the latest attack following the collapse of a ceasefire with Kurdish militants, security sources said.

According to Turkish Armed Forces’ statement released on its official website, “34 members of separatist terrorist organization have been neutralized in air operations in northern Iraq”.

Turkey has detained over 1,300 individuals with suspected ties to the IS, the PKK and leftist groups, while the military has unleashed several rounds of air strikes on PKK posts in northern Iraq.

At least 50 security personnel have been martyred, reportedly by the PKK, as tensions in the southeastern region of Turkey have flared up since a bombing linked to Daesh on July 20 in Suruc, which claimed the lives of 34 people. In his emotional remarks he seemed to hold the government’s policy shift from talks with the PKK to waging war against the group as being responsible for the death of his brother.
