TV host Eddie McGuire in trouble over violent joke
“The bully boy tactics in this game that we all love and cover is disgraceful”.

After being condemned by plenty on social media for having an inadequate response, McLachlan made another announcement in a press conference, saying, “In the past we might have just ignored the comments as part of the culture of footy”.
Eddie McGuire leaves the Triple M studios on Monday.
Wilson said Frawley had left her a voice message on Sunday apologising for his comments.
Referring to the Big Freeze at the MCG, where celebrities and sports people slide into a pool of iced water to raise money for charity, McGuire said: “I reckon we should start the campaign for a one-person slide next year”.
Meanwhile, 3AW journalist Peter Ford reported that AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan had issued McGuire an ultimatum: apologise to Wilson or resign.
As the interaction escalated, McGuire suggested charging onlookers $10,000 to stand around the outside and “bomb” her, while Brayshaw said you could grab bids from the seats too. It’s all good for footy.
This time it’s senior Fairfax journalist, Caroline Wilson, who’s fallen foul of his witty banter.
In the jokey exchange, McGuire says how for next year’s event, they should invite the Walkley-Award winning journalist. She should not be immune from criticism or disagreement.
“And make no mistake, the damage McGuire and co are doing by normalising attitudes of disrespect and violence toward a woman does more harm than a thousand themed matches and white ribbons on uniforms do good”, she wrote.
“I heard the comments and I turned to my husband and said: “Oh no, not again”, she told Guardian Australia. So my apologies have gone out to her.
Wilson saw McGuire at the Hall of Fame function and at the launch of the women’s league during the week and felt “uncomfortable being around him”. She just sucks you in and gets you and you start talking to her and then BANG!
McGuire later apologised and said it was “a slip of the tongue”, but Goodes was reportedly bitterly disappointed and said the remark had destroyed their friendship.
The Collingwood Football Club president has refused to apologise to Caroline Wilson despite admitting his comments could have been construed as encouraging domestic violence. In other words, she was doing her job.
“The fact these comments were made a week [before a controversy started] is an indictment on everyone involved in football”, he said. Because it’s “fun” to joke about drowning someone on a day meant to raise money to find a cure for a debilitating neurological condition that progressively causes sufferers to lose control of their ability to move and breathe.
There will be no real consequences for McGuire and he clearly doesn’t think he’s in the wrong.
Wayne Carey, for example, was also part of this noxious segment. This is a man who can not speak without spreading hate and now encouraging violence against women. And it’s not even just about a very particular kind of sexism that’s levelled at women who operate within so-called “male” spheres like the AFL.
Evoking the theme of countless reality TV competitions, the AFL boss described the cultural shift he’s attempting to implement as “a journey”.
