Twins C Suzuki takes foul off mask, leaves, gets stitches

Minnesota Twins’ Brian Dozier, left, misses the tag as Boston Red Sox’s Xander Bogaerts (2) … Manager John Farrell revealed after the game that this isn’t a brand new ailment – Betts has been receiving treatment for the knee issue, which has developed since the break – and it seems like the Red Sox want to get out in front of this and protect the premier leadoff hitter in the game.

The right-hander became the first Red Sox pitcher to begin a season 10-0 at home since Don Schwall in 1961, striking out eight batters in 6.2 innings to lead Boston to an 8-7 series-salvaging victory over the cellar-dwelling Minnesota Twins. “You give up 19 hits, 11 runs, not a good night from the mound”.

The Red Sox stay at Fenway to start a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers on Monday at 7:10 p.m. ET.

After an ominous beginning, Kyle Gibson put a decisive end to Boston’s two-game hitting outburst. He was called out at first, but the replay was pretty clear, and the game was tied.

“It’s always good to see him hit the ball up the middle and the other way”. “We fought hard and did what we had to do to win the game”.

Today is the 12-year anniversary of a moment, and a game, that Red Sox fans will never forget. The left-hander gave up five runs, raising his ERA to 4.51.

“I’ve just been in a good groove, and I’ve had really good run support, guys have been swinging the bats really well and played great defense behind me”, Porcello said. “Just a couple (bad) pitches”. “It doesn’t matter how you feel if you don’t go out there and execute”. It was all the scoring Minnesota needed as Gibson (3-6) did the rest before Brandon Kintzler took over and survived a wild bottom half of the ninth. Catcher Juan Centeno enjoyed a 3-for-4, three-RBI, one-run outing while designted hitter Kennys Vargas drove in two runs for Minnesota, who fell to 37-62 on the season.

Plate umpire Clint Fagan originally ruled him out on a throw from Bradley, but Vargas slipped his hand in on a head-first slide. Byron Buxton hit a two-run single in the seventh to make it 8-5.

Sano homered in the eighth.

– Dustin Pedroia added to the Red Sox’s slugfest in the fifth inning with a solo shot and finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Bradley covered a lot of ground to get there and it would have been a spectacular play, but Bradley has made his fair share of spectacular plays.

Twins: C Kurt Suzuki was back in the lineup after getting Friday off, but had to leave to get stitches on his chin after taking a foul off the mask. No structural damage was discovered, merely fluid build up and swelling in the area.

“Four runs through the first two innings is very uncharacteristic for (Price)”, Farrell said. Kimbrel had surgery for a meniscus tear in his left knee on July 11. Ramirez was elevated to Ortiz’ cleanup spot, and made his presence known early.

“I thought he was kind of flat in NY, and early on today that seemed to be the case”, Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

There were a handful of stoppages as dirt from the tracks and litter swirled.
