Twitter begins free streaming of NFL games

It will also have other Twitter content, such as top tweets and Periscopes (video from Twitter’s live-streaming app).

Twitter CFO Anthony Noto, who was previously CFO of the National Football League, said in April that combining tweets with live video is a “complete solution”.

For those opting to watch the game on Twitter, rather than CBS’s live television broadcast, the stream features a normal-sized video window with a running scroll or feed of tweets for fans and viewers to comment and keep track of throughout the contest. Twitter’s Apple TV app will have a unique feature that allows users to watch live video and Tweeted video clips, side by side.

Appropriately named, Twitter on Xbox, this new app is not an alternate version of the smartphone or PC app that’s been simply resized for a TV screen.

For the Xbox One, it’s now up for residents in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States. If you have an Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick, you’ll only be able to download the app if you’re in the USA or UK.

What’s more, users will not need a Twitter account to watch the games.

Evan Williams, a Twitter co-founder, already indicated as much two weeks ago. With arrangements like the one with the National Football League, the organization will have the capacity to present a more grounded defense to sponsors for video advancements.

Twitter has struggled with user growth and advertising competition, and livestreaming the games gives the social network a new avenue to attract users as it tries to catch up with rivals like Facebook Inc.

The live stream on Twitter will show CBS’s broadcast for the first five games and will play alongside selected tweets about the action.

“While the direct ad dollars involved will be relatively small this year – Twitter only sells about 15 spots per game – strategically Twitter needs this to be successful so that it can position itself as a premiere partner for live streaming more broadly going forward”.

Others suggested Twitter stream more live sporting events.

“The quality is better than my HD TV, but it being delayed stinks”, wrote Twitter user DCBlueStar (@DCBlueStar).

Twitter, Inc. (NYSE: TWTR) is what’s happening in the world right now. I think what a lot of people maybe don’t realize is that the latest news is always on Twitter first.
