Twitter was down for about two hours Tuesday morning due to technical issues. But problems lingered; those in our US office had trouble posting tweets via Twitter.com around 9:30 a.m. ET; an error message blamed server issues.

The string of service problems though poses a unique challenge for Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who has long struggled to convert the site’s user base into profit for its investors, even announcing a major staff reduction at the end of previous year.

Tech news website re/code reported this month that tweets of up to 10,000 characters could be available from March, winning a mixed response from users.

Twitter shares were down more than 4 percent midday on the news of the outage, which was the third in a week. Outages were reported across Europe and appeared to be concentrated in Britain, France and Germany, according to DownDetector.uk, a Twitter monitoring service.

The San Francisco group acknowledged in an online posting that some users were “experiencing problems accessingTwitter” but offered no details. By 8:40 a.m. ET, Twitter users in Canada were reporting that the media platform is operating normally.

Twitter users were met with an error message.

Updated with Twitter’s update on the source of the outage. “Since availability issues don’t generally cause data leakage, we may never know the true cause of today’s outage”.
