Twitter Gets In The Game With Rio Olympic Hashtag-Emojis

Like with traditional Moments, when the event is over, the tweets and news disappear from your timeline completely. Of course, when a Moment that you follow ends, so do the Tweets, leaving your timeline the way it was before.

With Facebook’s new Olympics update users can share photos and videos or broadcast live to friends and family while wearing their favorite country flag mask on MSQRD. When you tap on a country Moment, relevant tweets will be added into the timeline throughout the entirety of the event.

As mentioned earlier, Twitter has recently made a hard push to be, and for now is, the apparent leader in live, in-the-moment sports discussion. This made it more efficient for users to indulge in the type of dialogue that interests them the most. However, Twitter Track was gradually pushed out by algorithmic timelines, search tools, and hashtags. Fans can also catch up on what they missed every day with recap Moments that will highlight results, medal counts and more.

The Moments tab is now available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom and the United States. People in these markets, as well as Germany and France, will also be able to follow country specific Moments.

“Twitter’s activation of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will bring fans around the world together to see what’s happening with the teams before, during, and after the top athletes compete for glory”, said Twitter chief marketing officer Leslie Berland.

The Olympics have spawned emojis aplenty, as 207 team emojis can be triggered by users simply by including the three-letter country code for each team in a hashtag, including the Refugee Olympic Team (#ROT). Sports emojis and more generic hashtags such as #Olympics and #Rio2016 will also work in Arabic, Japanese, and Korean.

There will be hashtags displaying emojis in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

In a strive to prove that it’s all about being “live”, making a good impression during the Olympics could play a role in helping Twitter reinvigorate its base while also showing inactive and potential new users what it’s all about.

And now, the Twitterverse’s emoji bundle has expanded even further with a special tribute to the Olympics, as Twitter has announced its own mix of Games-themed images. The bolstered Olympics tab in Moments will begin rolling out “in the coming days”, but users can already prepare for the Olympics by reading its dedicated tab in Twitter’s lightning bolt Moments menu right now. Through Twitter Amplify, fans will be able to see video highlights from their favorite events.
