Twitter Inc (TWTR) Suffers Hour-Long Global Outage

Twitter Inc said on Jan 19 that it had reversed a glitchy software update and resolved outages widely reported across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and North America that affected users of the social network on computers and phones.

Even though yesterday’s issues had been fixed, Twitter’s service again began experiencing problems starting at 3:20 a.m. Eastern Standard Time today, according to Downdetector.

One spokesperson for Twitter did not comment on the matter.

The company acknowledged that some users were “experiencing problems” accessing the site for several hours due to an internal code change, and said the problem was not centralized to any particular region. Twitter’s development site also confirmed the outage.

Dubois, whose research focuses on technology and communication, said social media users can’t count on a one-stop shop given technology’s fallible nature.

The outage is not affecting all Twitter users.

A spokesperson for Twitter told us this morning that the company will provide further updates on its developer status blog and its Twitter Support page.

Users began reporting blackouts at about 8.30am GMT on Tuesday, with timelines then sporadically reappearing for some mobile users just before 11am. The Twitter service being down is a hit to the availability, however there isn’t enough information to know if this was a malicious attack or an operational error.

Web users were welcomed with a message informing them that “something is technically wrong”.

That’s how many active users are on Twitter… but perhaps we should say in-active.

“So #twitterdown was trending when Twitter was down?!” one user tweeted.

Investors have been disappointed by Twitter’s stagnant growth rate and the recent outage has intensified those concerns – it also reflects badly on Jack Dorsey, the Twitter co-founder who recently returned as permanent CEO. Users faced access problems that lasted for an hour.
