Twitter plans to expand tweets’ character limit to 10000

Twitter now caps tweets at 140 characters, though in August it changed its direct message feature to accept private tweets of up to 10,000 characters.

“I’ve challenged our teams to look beyond assumptions about what makes Twitter the best play to share what’s happening. Clicking on the tweets would then expand them to reveal more content”.

Twitter has stuck with its 140 character limit for tweets through thick and thin though recently it chose to remove this limit from direct messages which now have a limit of 10,000 characters. Like the release timeframe, though, the character limit could change by the time that it officially launches.

Twitter has yet to comment on the new feature, but it’s no secret that the company has been working on an array of new features.

The feature is rolling out globally, with Twitter saying the aim is to allow users to “express themselves” more freely.

In fact, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said during its July earnings call that more design changes could come in the future to address these usability issues.

Twitter will be attempting to add the availability of more content to your Twitter stream without disrupting the way you browse now.

Twitter confirmed that public tweets would continue to operate by the 140-character limit rule. Do you want longer Tweets?

They’ve left the door unlocked, let’s run!

That’s not to say that it’s going to shift from this limit completely, the microblogging network may introduce a separate feature that enables users to tweet longer, similar functionality is already provided by third-party services.
