It is hard to imagine a more qualified person to help figure out how Twitter can make more money, and grow its user base, than the former chief business officer at the world’s most successful internet company.
“Omid is a proven & experienced leader, who will directly help & coach me and our leadership, and help us recruit the best folks to Twitter”, Dorsey said.
In 2014 he was appointed chief business officer for Google.
However, despite his obvious experience in the wider sector, Kordestani has one of the least active accounts on Twitter, having only tweeted 11 times in five and half years on the site; and three of those tweets came on Wednesday in the wake of the announcement of his new job.
Twitter has named Google’s Omid Kordestani as its executive chairman.
Cue the return of speculation about Google buying Twitter. Regardless, his recruiting and business savvy will be of more immediate value for Twitter, which is in the midst of trying to get back on track under Mr. Dorsey.
The 38-year-old tweeted the news in which he described the decision to “streamline” the company as ‘extremely tough’. “Omid was instrumental in establishing Google’s business and helped us develop really close, longstanding partnerships across the industry”, the spokesperson said.
And Kordestani, along with new Alphabet/Google CFO Ruth Porat, also won raves from analysts for how they handled the company’s last earnings conference call in July.
Twitter shares fell 3.1 per cent to $29.90 in extended trading on Friday (pictured).

Twitter’s other board members have been knocked for failing to use the service – which has long struggled to explain to the world why it’s useful. The Twitter board of directors only recently announced that Dorsey’s new position would become permanent, making it the second time he has filled this role. We are doing this with the utmost respect for each and every person.
