In this either-or-question, Sanders’ answer seemed to indicate he believes only black lives matter.

Black Lives Matter also saw a spike in Google searches the moment it was mentioned. “But if you don’t want me to be here, it’s okay”. Back then, Sanders was clearly more comfortable talking about income inequality than racial inequality. Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley gave a long-winded answer to make the same point. “We need to combat institutional racism from top to bottom and we need major, major reforms in a broken criminal justice system”.
“I think that President Obama has been a great moral leader on these issues and has laid out an agenda that has been obstructed by the Republicans at every turn”, the former state secretary said.
Clinton concluded with: “We need a new New Deal for communities of color”, her last words nearly drowned out by a few of the loudest cheers of the night.
“And I put the African American soldier on the Mall”.
Front-runner Hillary Clinton was let off the hook as debate moderator Anderson Cooper rephrased the question, asking her what she would do for the black community that President Obama has not. It’s hard to determine why Clinton didn’t go there, especially since she just sat down with Black Lives Matter activists last week, and surely she was prepared with a quick response if anyone directly asked her about the movement or her meeting.
“Every life in this country matters”, Webb said, edging quite close to “all lives matter” rhetoric.
More than 300 billboards around the country have been emblazoned with the phrase “Blue Lives Matter”. “Because of the rise in crime, it was the bloodiest month since the 1960s in Baltimore…The best way to protect black lives is to keep them safe from murderers and criminals who would prey on them”. The movement is not an attempt to deny the importance of non-Black lives.
“The Black Lives Matter movement is making … a very, very legitimate and serious point, and that is that as a nation we have undervalued the lives of black lives, people of color”, he said. But when African Americans experience Depression-like conditions in this country, it’s just considered business as usual. “Black Lives Matter was simply to call attention to a unique set of circumstances that was happening in the black community; and to any way undermine that, or belittle that, ultimately in no way shape or form adds to the relationship between police officers and the black community, or the community at large, because most people get it”.
