Twitter’s reworked character limit tipped to arrive September 19

Today’s report cites a “source familiar with the company’s business”, though Twitter itself would declined to comment on the rumored date.

Twitter will begin excluding photos, videos, usernames, and more from the 140-character tweet limit on September 19.

No date for the change has been officially announced but according to The Verge it will come into effect next Monday.

Twitter is making good on its promise to give users more room in tweets. Twitter’s plans could still change, the publication notes. They have since agreed the 140 character limit is here to stay, but this new innovation seems to be a welcome compromise.

Earlier this year, Twitter confirmed that it would enable longer tweets by excluding attachments and usernames from the 140-character limit on a tweet. In replies, the original user’s @username will no longer count towards the 140-characters either.

“But sometimes you write a perfectly crafted 139-character tweet and then add a photo or a video to a tweet and it goes over the character limit, and you have to waste time cutting it down”. “I’m excited to see even more dialog because of this”. It’s unclear whether all of these changes will occur simultaneously; certain content types may gradually stop counting against the character limit in stages.
