Twitter tipped in plan to increase 140-character limit
Reports surfaced Tuesday suggesting Twitter is looking to build out its message-sharing platform to allow longer Tweets in an attempt to attract additional users.

The popular social networking website Twitter has made a decision to break the 140-character limit in the tweets, as per people who are familiar with the plans of the company.
The sources say that Twitter has been talking about increasing the 140-character limit for years, and, of course, many users have always been pushing for longer tweets. The only current way to publish big chunks of text on Twitter is by using an image via OneShot. Co-founder Jack Dorsey, who is serving as interim CEO as the company undergoes an internal and external search, has reportedly endorsed the update. The management has clearly announced that the new CEO should be able to give his complete attention to Twitter, and since jack Dorsey is not likely to leave Square, his appointment as CEO is facing a few resistance.
It is possible that Twitter will stop counting user handles or links in the character count to free up a few precious space, but with no other details we’ll have to wait and see.
Separately, Twitter may also ease up on restrictions within its legacy app and become a bit more lenient when counting those characters, according to the report. A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment.

At the same time, the character limits has been a defining trait of the microblogging site since it came into existence.
