Closer rivals Facebook and Instagram are well ahead of Twitter, with the two coming in with user bases of 1.5 billion and 400 million respectively. The first tweet was done by CEO Jack Dorsey on March 21, 2006, stating, “just setting up my twttr“. But, what shall always remain the same is that Twitter is where a trend is born, and Twitter is where the trend reaches the world.
Since that day, Twitter has grown to nearly 4,000 employees in more than 35 countries and over 320 million monthly active users.
Twitter chose 140 characters so that a tweet could fit into a single SMS message. But Dorsey also said that the 140-character restriction “inspires creativity and brevity”. It became so much easier to complain publicly about the bad pizza delivery you received last night when you can tag the company in your tweet.
NEW YORK (AP) – Happy birthday, Twitter.
The hashtag made twitter a more powerful platform for activists and a popular tool for breaking news.
The first tweet from outer space was posted by NASA astronaut TJ Creamer from the International Space Station.
Although shares of Twitter spiked Monday morning, the company’s stock hovered around Friday’s close of $16.85 later in the day.
And in case you’re wondering, the most followed person on Twitter is singer Katy Perry who had 84.8 million followers as of Monday.
In January, a report from tech news website re/code said that Twitter was building a new feature to allow longer tweets with a targeted launch date of the end of Q1.

It goes on to commemorate the uprising in the Arab world, Gay-Lesbian law in the US, Nelson Mandela’s death, Boston marathon bombing among many such incidents where Twitter users came together to show their support.
