Twitter to put ‘important tweets’ at the top of user timelines
Twitter is to give users the ability to filter out boring and inane tweets from the people they follow.

“We’ve already noticed that people who have used this new feature tend to retweet and tweet more, which is good for everyone”, Jahr said.
Here’s how it works.
According to the Twitter blog, users can elect, through their settings, to see the most important tweets at the top of their timeline in reverse chronological order.
Twitter is tweaking the way that tweets appear in its users’ timelines in its latest attempt to broaden the appeal of its messaging service.
It’s a risky move for Twitter because it threatens to infuriate many of its 320 million users who like things the way they are. The “Show me the best tweets first” feature is available to people accessing Twitter using a Web browser or applications on mobile devices powered by Apple or Android software. Twitter will switch all of its users to the new experience in the coming weeks. This prompted Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to promise that the company was listening, and that it wouldn’t be introducing any drastic changes to the chronological timeline.
The problems became apparent Wednesday when Twitter announced it had zero growth in the number of monthly active users during the last three months of 2015. It’s also viewed as a hotbed of abusive behavior, which intimidates both new and existing users.
They’re giving you the best, most relevant tweets for you, based on what they think you want to see.
It’s official – Twitter is slightly moving away from being a hosepipe of real-time wittering. The Verge reported that the feature is based on the algorithms that power Twitter’s “While you were away” feature, which show you a selection of tweets based on how popular they are, and whether you regularly interact with the person tweeting them.

Dorsey, who helped start Twitter Inc. almost 10 years ago, is hoping the revised presentation of tweets will prove more engaging to newcomers without alienating the messaging service’s most loyal users. Twitter says it has seen in increase in tweets and retweets in its tests, though it did not specify how much. Rampant growth among Twitter’s rivals has made investors question the advertising and product strategies of its leadership: Facebook has 1.59 billion users and Instagram 400 million every month, and Snapchat at least 100 million every day. Dorsey said Twitter had noticed users posting pictures to post longer messages but the information could not be searched or analysed in image form.
