Twitter To Remove 140 Character Restriction?
A report from Re/Code says that Twitter will soon allow users to create public posts of up to 10,000 characters, similar to the person-to-person Direct Messages it introduced last July.

“We’re not going to be shy about building more utility and power into Twitter for people”, he said on Twitter.
However, the same report has also stated that 10,000 character limit could be changed before the launch which doesn’t have a fixed date but is is expected to be in the first quarter of 2016.
The 140-character ceiling had been established in 2006, a response to the 160-character limit that SMS text messages had on mobile phones. Adding more characters, perhaps with only the first 140 shown, would make these longer messages a full part of the Twitter experience.
Perhaps the most uniquely defining element of the Twitter experience is the 140 character limit, which keeps thoughts short and sweet… or at least spread across multiple tweets, as needed.
Twitter is said to be working ways to reignite user growth.
Twitter has been subjected to number of changes since Dorsey took over as CEO back in October. Coming up with the new feature could imply that Dorsey is looking to expand the user base.
Twitter is considering ditching its 140-character limit in tweets. For tweets that are longer than 140 characters, users may have to click and expand to see the remaining text. “Instead, what if that text…was actually text?” “Well, I think this definitely represents a company that’s moving away from its core principles a little bit here”, Mashable senior business reporter Seth Fiegerman told CBS News. Twitter is now having 300 million users and was surpassed by photo sharing service, Instagram, which is apparently owned by Facebook Inc, which passed 400 million users past year. Text that could be highlighted.

If true, the new character limit would represent the latest in a series of changes made to the social network as it looks to prop up its struggling share price.
