Two Australian climbers fall to their deaths in New Zealand

Police have released the names of two Australian climbers who died after falling from Mt Silberhorn in the Southern Alps on Tuesday.

Attempts had been made to contact the family of the climbers, who were from overseas.

The pair ran a business called Vertical World Mountain Guiding.

Hollaway’s expertise was in ice-climbing and he also taught avalanche awareness courses in New Zealand and Australia.

Ms Thistlethwaite worked at the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office, and had worked at Parks Victoria.

It took four rescuers more than two hours to recover the bodies from the bottom of a steep face on the eastern slopes of the mountain.

Police are investigating and believe one may have fallen and pulled the other down.

The deaths will be referred to the coroner. “We can’t figure that out at this stage”, Gaskin said.

The rescue operation was carried out with a member of the rescue team attached on a long-line.

Another Melbourne climber, Nicola Anne Andrews, 29, fell to her death in the same region on December 23. She was airlifted to hospital but later died from her injuries.

Stephen Dowall, a South Canterbury-raised United Nations worker based in Myanmar, also died after failing to reach the Empress Hut, at the head of the Hooker Glacier, in poor conditions in late November.
