A 14-year-old and 15-year-old were swimming at Barmouth beach when they got into difficulties at around 1.40pm on Sunday.

Separate searches were carried out in strong winds – with RNLI lifeboats, coastguard teams and a rescue helicopter immediately sent to the scene.

Coastguard rescue teams, the coastguard rescue helicopter, an air ambulance helicopter and the cops are on the scene.

George Crumpler, HM Coastguard area commander, said: “We’re still searching the area, but as time goes on, hope starts to diminish”.

At 5pm, the operation will return to “full search mode”.

She said: “The volunteer lifeboat crews at both Barmouth RNLI and Cardigan RNLI will be ready to launch the lifeboats again if requested by HM Coastguard”.

“The search is continuing at a scaled down level because the tide has come in”.

“They did find the man, I don’t know his name, he’s a big man”.

“They have liaison officer with them and are being looked after”.

Ali Yafi, a cousin of one of the missing teens, thanked the emergency services despite the respective families’ harrowing ordeal.

The 14-year-old has been named as Wasim Mohammed.

It is understood that the boys were part of a large group of tourists visiting the area from Birmingham.
