Police say the suspects in the shooting have criminal records.
Darwin Sorrells was sentenced to six years in prison in January 2013 on a gun charged and was released early on parole, while Derren Sorrells is a known gang member, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. He says police also are investigating whether the encounter involved a driver for a rideshare company.
Aldridge’s family says she recently relocated to the neighborhood on the city’s South Side, about 1½ miles southwest of the University of Chicago.
According to the Chicago Tribune, which chronicles every homicide in the city, at least 455 people have been shot to death in Chicago in the first seven and a half months of the year.
Hopefully Wade decision to play for the Chicago Bulls after signing a 2-year contract this summer will allow him and his family to support Aldrige’s family and infant child.
Wade also spoke on a panel addressing gun violence hosted by ESPN’s The Undefeated.
“The city of Chicago is hurting”, he wrote.
“The idea that certain politicians – he’s not one of them – have looked the other way and have not done everything they can do to help all Americans, including our communities of color, is unacceptable to all of us”. Not for me and my family but for the future of our world.
He followed that by writing, “These young kids are screaming for help!”
32-year-old Nykea Aldridge had just registered her children for school when she was allegedly shot and killed by the Sorrells brothers. Jolinda Wade said she had participated in the town hall meeting on gun violence Thursday, “never knowing that the next day we would be the ones that would actually be living and experiencing it”.
“Bullets that fly around that have no name chose to find its way to her head”, said Wade’s mother, Jolinda, a pastor.
Chicago’s murders were up 72 percent in the first quarter of 2016 over the previous year, while shootings overall had increased 88 percent over the same period (3,000 and counting) over the same period. Its murder rate is higher than the more populous cities of NY and Los Angeles.
“My cousin was killed today in Chicago”, Wade tweeted Friday night.

“I just brought out the teddy bears to represent, you know, the children, and their memories, and the love of their mom”, said Linda Taylor, who lives near the scene of the shooting. Hours after he posted the original tweet, which was deleted because it misspelled the N.B.A. star’s name and corrected with a subsequent tweet bearing the same controversial message, the G.O.P. nominee offered his condolences to the family, but the backlash was swift.
