According to police, the arrests stem from a July 25 incident in which officers responded to a call in reference to a child found unresponsive.

Tenisha Renea Wells, 25, the boy’s mother and Patrick Jamal Chambers, 28, were arrested Tuesday morning without incident after detectives determined they were responsible for the child’s death, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

No arrests were made at the time, because several adults were in a position to provide care for the child, officials said. Emergency personnel transported the child to Novant Presbyterian Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities determined back on the night of the murder that physical assault was the cause of the child’s death.

The medical examiner said the boy had broken ribs, bruises and a lacerated liver.

Barr says she would often see the 2-year-old boy playing in the kiddie pool in the front yard of his Farm Pond Lane home.

Late last week, officers reportedly seized almost 20 items from the home including dumbells, a hatchet, hot glue gun, broom handles and fireplace pokers.
