Two charged over planned terror attacks in Australia
Australian police said on Wednesday they had arrested two more men in Sydney as part of an operation that thwarted a potential attack by home-grown Islamist militants previous year on government buildings.

The counter-terrorism raids are part of Operation Appleby, an ongoing operation that has been focusing on a group of about 20 young men who police allege are committed to carrying out a terrorist attack in Australia.
Abdullah Salihy, 24, was arrested at Memorial Avenue in Merrylands and Mohamed Almaouie, 20, was arrested in Bankstown.
‘We will allege that the Woolloomooloo navy base was one of those locations, ‘ Ms Burn said.
“A group of people who came together with the idea the intent to carry out something and they started to make preparations to carry out a terror attack”, Dep Comm Burn said.
Both of the arrested men chose not to appear in court and were denied bail.
“I do need to stress that this activity today relates to events of last year, it relates to documents and other material seized in search warrants last year”, she said.
Australia, a staunch ally of the United States and its battle against Islamist militants in Iraq and Syria, has been on heightened alert for attacks by home-grown radicals since previous year.
However, the Australian Federal Police have released a statement that the arrests “are not related to a current or impending threat to the community”.
A police source told the ABC that the Merrylands home of Salihy raided this morning was also raided earlier this month.
The deputy was scant on detail but said police believed they had employed “disruption strategies” to break up a possible plot.
Meanwhile, police in Britain yesterday said they had arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with suspected “extremist Islamist terrorism”.
Those charges stemmed from evidence gathered during pre-dawn raids in Australia late past year in which 15 people were taken into custody and an alleged plan to kidnap and behead a member of the public was uncovered.
Cazeneuve said this brings the total number of foiled attacks in France to 10 since 2013.
