In November, a judge ordered for dash-cam video to be released of the incident in which McDonald was shown moving away from the officer as he was sacked upon. Protests over the McDonald shooting, investigation and lack of accountability led to the firing of Garry McCarthy as superintendent and ultimately a federal investigation into the CPD by the U.S. Department of Justice.
An attorney for a white Chicago police officer charged with murder in the shooting of a black teenager says he is considering asking for a change of venue after comments Mayor Rahm Emanuel made about his client.
Department of Justice officials have finished two days of meetings in Chicago as they begin a civil rights investigation into the city police department.
McDonald was walking down a street and carrying a knife with a 3-inch blade when he was shot 16 times.
And there could soon be a request for a change of venue with defense attorney Dan Herbert citing words from Mayor Rahm Emanuel… “And, you know, I understand the mayor has a job to do, but quite frankly I was upset that the comments continued to go on and on and on”.
A court hearing was scheduled for Friday to formally read out the indictment against Jason Van Dyke. The mayor said last month after the video was released Van Dyke violated the professional standards of a police officer and the “basic moral standards” that hold the Chicago community together. President Barack Obama’s former chief of staff said Wednesday that the federal investigation, to which he was initially cool, will bring a “fresh set of eyes” on persistent allegations of police misconduct.
Chicago joins 22 other police departments similarly investigated since the start of the Obama administration, including Baltimore and New Orleans.
