Two civilians injured in Kashmir gunfight, three in clash

Two civilians were today injured during an encounter between militants and security forces in Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said.

An Army spokesman told AIR that on a tip off the joint operation of Army and Special Operations Group of State Police was launched this evening to track down militants in Dogripora Awantipora area in Pulwama district.

Spokesman of Hurriyat (M) in a statement said troops unleashed a “reign of terror” in the entire area Dogripora, Awantipora by harassing local residents and even those families whose kin had been injured in Tuesday’s firing.

“While the girl was hit on her hand, the youth sustained a gunshot wound in the abdomen”, said the officer, adding both have been taken to a hospital for treatment.

As the word about the gunfight spread, the villagers came out and starting pelting stones on the forces who in turn resorted to aerial and pellet firing to disperse them, witnesses said. He said the forces retaliated and the firing continued for a few time. The militants opened fire on the security forces resulting in a brief exchange between the two sides.
