Two dead as Hermine expected to regain hurricane force
“Right now, it’s looking like we’re not having much of any beach fun”, she told CNN.

An area of high pressure over Canada is blocking the system, but Hermine still may be churning off the coast as late as Thursday, Sarsalari said.
The storm, now heading north by northeast, is expected to take a northern or northwestern turn.
Though Hermine has lost its tropical status, it was still packing up to 70 miles per hour winds on Sunday, though entirely offshore.
Prepare your home and review your plan for evacuation in case a Hurricane or Tropical Storm Warning is issued. The NHC warned in its advisory that “there is a danger of life-threatening inundation in the next 36 hours from Chincoteague, Virginia, to Sandy Hook, New Jersey”. The eastern track means a less severe impact, but you’re still going to see beach erosion, storm surges and risky rip currents.
Coastal Flooding: Tidal flooding along the oceanfront and bays will continue at high tides. The major one will be Monday from 10am until noon, so you may want to stay away from flood-prone areas.
The center forecast the heaviest rains to remain offshore, with Hermine expected to produce 1 to 2 inches of rain through Monday from Long Island to eastern MA.
One concern is the storm’s timing since it falls on Labor Day weekend.
Governors all along the coast announced emergency preparations.
The storm was expected to spend the next several days meandering in the Atlantic, gaining some strength.
Sails in Lewes, Delaware, aboard a replica of the colonial ship Kalmar Nyckel have been canceled for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
He directed that Island Beach State Park be reopened Monday at 9 a.m. but he noted state officials would closely monitor Hermine’s track.
Jim Derrick, a co-owner of family businesses, reported traffic lighter than usual.
“This weekend would normally be a parking lot”, The said in a telephone interview. He called the weekend “definitely disappointing”, although his bounce house was packed. The last hurricane to make landfall in the United States was Arthur in 2014 in North Carolina. “The most frequent cause of loss of life (from tropical cyclones in recent decades) is from inland flooding due to heavy rainfall”.
So far, the storm has killed two people-a man in Florida who was killed by a tree and a driver on a North Carolina bridge near the Outer Banks who was killed in an accident caused by high winds.
At 8 a.m., Hermine was throttling a region located 295 miles east-southeast of Ocean City, Md., still carrying maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
It was expected to lose forward speed and then “meander” offshore of the Delaware, Maryland and Virginia coasts into Sunday, the center said.
“After assessing the current forecast with emergency management officials, I have made a decision to partially activate the state emergency operations center on Sunday evening to monitor conditions across the state”.
As a result, tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the entire coastline.
Since sea levels have risen due to climate change, the storm surges pushed by Hermine could be even more damaging, climate scientists say. “And it’s only the beginning”.
