Two dead in Ellicott City flooding

Earlier in the day, Kittleman told WBAL NewsRadio 1090 that a woman’s body was found in the Patapsco River overnight on the Baltimore County side of the river.

The National Weather Service recorded 6.5 inches of “historic heavy rainfall” on Saturday.

At midnight, I signed a Declaration of Emergency for Howard County and Governor Hogan also declared a State of Emergency for Howard County, making the County eligible to receive state assets and putting in motion the process to seek federal assistance.

“The thunderstorms caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure in the central part of the state, including intense flooding in the historic town of Ellicott City”, the governor said in a statement.

Officials evaluated about 200 buildings Sunday, of those four or five will be classified as destroyed and another 20 to 30 buildings will be categorized as having significant damage. Main Street slopes dramatically toward the river and has always been susceptible to flooding.

Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman told The Associated Press that the devastation was the worst he’d seen in 50 years living in the county, including Hurricane Agnes in 1972, which caused the river to overflow its banks.

Ellicott City was established in 1772 as a mill town along the Patapsco, and many 18th and 19th-Century buildings were still intact before Saturday’s floods.

“We’ve had severe damage in the lower part of Ellicott City on Main Street”, Kittleman told 11 News.

Watsula from Lebanon County, Pennsylvania was visiting family in the area, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Reports indicated that rain was considerably heavier in Howard County. The woman is hesitant to exit the auto, but bystanders plead with her to abandon the vehicle.

At the time Ellicott City was just a midpoint between our homes, but something about it kept pulling us back. Hogan and other elected officials said the county, state and federal governments will work together to make sure the affected area is rebuilt. Howard County Fire & EMS said Sunday morning that the street would remain closed until further notice, and people should avoid the area due to gas leaks and downed power lines.
