Houston police confirmed to KPRC-TV that the shooting happened outside the Courtyard Apartments about 11:30 a.m. Friday.

The Houston Police Department announced via Tweet that a possible suspect has been detained.

Although no threats were posed toward UH, the University of Houston Police Department maintained high visibility across the campus and were ready to lend a hand to the neighboring crisis.

“I would say, ‘Hey guys, everybody attack him”.

A shooting was also reported late Thursday night in the vicinity of the complex, according to a post on the university’s website, but no further details were provided.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said Friday evening that neither man has been arrested or charged in the shooting, which killed a male student and injured another person.

“You think about security, upgrading it and notifying your neighbors when you see something out of place”, Guess-Jeffries said.

Rudley urged the school’s roughly 9,700 students to be more vigilant, reminding them that the campus was in a large city.

Classes at the university will resume on Monday. TSU was placed on lockdown and classes were cancelled.

“It’s insane. It’s broad daylight’ she said”.

Both shootings today occurred a week after a shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon left nine people dead – not including the shooter.

The deceased victim was a freshman at the university, according to the school’s president, John Rudley.
