Hazel Boyd and Pam Merkel of Lynn both ran, and both finished, though not together. He won the 2012 Boston Marathon.
About 50 participants with visual impairments and other disabilities are in Monday’s race. He and Desisa were running side-by-side after breaking away early and stayed that way nearly to the end of the 26.2 miles.

Most of the top American runners sat out this year so they could focus their preparation on this summer’s Olympic Games.
