The shooting happened at a home on Wharton Drive just after 8:30 p.m. Officers found an elderly male deceased with a gunshot wound to the head. However, Povero says one officer is in critical condition after being shot in the “upper torso and extremities”.

The officers were told a witness was in a backyard shed. Upon approaching the shed, the person inside began shooting at them. Officers returned fire, and investigators were working to determine whether the person in the shed is dead or alive. A SWAT team on the scene has deployed gas canisters in an attempt to extricate the suspect from the shed. MedStar ambulance service said neither of the officers had life-threatening injuries. The other officer was hit once in the chest, but was protected by his ballistic vest and only has minor injuries, Povero said.
