Rep. Sean Duffy, a Republican who represents Wisconsin’s seventh congressional district, which includes Antigo, praised the police officers’ response to the shooting. “We can only say “what if, ‘ but I have a feeling that, that ‘what if” would have been much more tragic”, Van Ooyen said.

Saturday night, April 23, at approximately 11:00 PM, a man arrived at the Antigo High School Prom with a rifle and began shooting while outside the entrance to the building, according to a release from Antigo Police.

The wounded female was treated for a gunshot wound at a hospital and released, while the male underwent surgery for non-life threatening injuries. Wagner was then taken into custody and died at a hospital. According to police Jakob E. Wagner, 18, opened fire with a high-powered rifle outside of the a prom at Antigo High School late Saturday.

Dewey described Wagner as an “all-around good guy” and said he generally seemed happy.

“There definitely is a different mood in the building, but students are marking the best of it”, Zamzow said. “We’re able to use any building within the school district with their cooperation, so by being prepared, having that training available to us, we were able to respond”.

One-on-one or in small groups, they said, he was a thoughtful, considerate teen who made it his job to cheer up friends when they were feeling down, and who a music instructor was quick to invite back to school when the band needed an extra musician.

Antigo Police Chief Eric Roller wound not confirm whether Wagner had been taunted by other students, the Chicago Tribune reports, saying “I can’t get into specifics on that”.

Police haven’t said what they think caused Wagner to carry out the shooting.

Friends of Wagner’s said said they knew he was interested in hunting, and several knew he had access to a gun.

Roller said his department regularly trains for “active shooter situations” and that officers regularly staff school events.

“Please continue to pray for Collin, his girlfriend, two friends, fellow classmates, and everyone else involved as they recover from this traumatic night”, the statement said.

Gov. Scott Walker is calling for more discussion about bullying in the wake of a shooting outside a high school prom in northern Wisconsin.

Police said the scene had been secured and there was no additional threat to the community.

“We take a look at social media, that’s a big thing”, said Lt. Jamie Graff with the Kaukauna Police Department.

For some students that idea of normalcy was just too hard to grasp, and because school was not mandatory on Monday, some students left.
