The shooting took place some 20 minutes after the last parade float had left, Pass Christian Police Chief Tim Hendricks told the WLOX broadcaster.

Bates’ and Major’s bodies, covered in yellow sheets, lay near her mother’s steps later on.

Thousands of people have converged on the city to see the elaborate parades in recent weeks and catch beads and other trinkets thrown by people on the floats. We thought it was fireworks at first, ‘ Celeste Plaisance told the Sun Herald.

After hearing the shots, she ran to her mother’s house to hide. I had a clear line of sight to a ball field and I saw 150 to 250 people scattering, running as fast as they could. What a great day it had been.
