Two killed, five injured in IHK protests

Two persons were killed in fresh clashes with security forces on Saturday in south Kashmir as the government moved in soldiers to help restore normalcy in the worst hit region of the valley that remained shut for the 64th day.

A police officer and four militants were killed in separate incidents on Sunday in Indian occupied Kashmir as hundreds of residents clashed with security forces in the region hit by weeks of deadly unrest.

Sheikh, according to police, was hit on the head by a flying tear gas shell.

Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed has admitted that Indian army operation is not against Hurriyat leaders but objective of Indian forces raids is to disperse protesting young Kashmiris.

Separatists have asked people to stage a protest march to the headquarters of the UN Military Observers Group in Srinagar. Over 100 people were injured in the clashes.

Thousands of people in Indian-administered Kashmir have been protesting against Indian rule nearly daily since the killing of a popular rebel leader in a gun battle with soldiers on July 8, staging “freedom rallies”. Tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians, have died in the fighting. Dooru is the native village of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani.

“There would be no curfew anywhere in the Valley today (Sunday)”, a senior police official said.

CRPF, J&K police and SOG men attacked the pro-freedom rally in Tukroo Shopian in South Kashmir on Saturday morning in which many civilians were injured. Eyewitnesses said police and paramilitary forces were removing barricades set up by people on the roads at the time. “He was shifted to Sub District Hospital Rajpora for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries”, he said.

“The chief reviewed the security situation and collaborative measures of security forces towards ensuring peace and calm in the state”, Colonel NN Joshi, defence spokesman at Srinagar, said.

The statement said miscreants also set ablaze Government High School building at Batingoo.
