The Massachusetts State Fire Marshal confirmed that the bodies of Nancy and Richard Brown, both 66, were recovered from the scene.
A gas leak was being investigated as a possible cause of the fire. Franklin Fire Chief Gary McCarraher said the flames were intense and spread quickly before they even arrived on the scene.
The fire was contained by 8:15 a.m., according to the fire chief.
The condominium unit was leveled.
The explosion happened inside the end unit of a triplex.
The Massachusetts State Fire Marshal and the Massachusetts State Police as well as the Norfolk DA’s office are investigating the fire.
The fire appeared to have been fueled by propane, and there are two underground propane tanks beneath the unit, officials said.
Firefighters from Bellingham, Norfolk, Wrentham and Plainville provided mutual aid, according to the newspaper.
