Hundreds of firefighters are trying to protect homes from the wildfire ripping through brushy canyonlands north of Los Angeles.

The area was among those ordered evacuated as the fire raged through brush withered by days of 100-degree temperatures as Southern California sweltered through a heat wave.
Fire units rushed to a home on Josel Drive as flames approached behind the house, officials said.
The body was discovered about 7:20 p.m.in the 26700 block of Iron Canyon Road, according to Deputy Lisa Jansen of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s Information Bureau.
The blaze also remained at 10 percent contained, the Forest Service’s Andrew Mitchell said.
Fighting the fire – named for the area’s Sand Canyon – is a challenge, said Nathan Judy, fire information officer with the Angeles National Forest, because of the rugged terrain and the 10- to 20-mph winds blowing the fire toward the populated part of the county.
The fire erupted Friday afternoon in the city of Santa Clarita and spread southeastward into the Angeles National Forest, scorching more than 17 square miles.
More than 900 firefighters and water-dropping helicopters planned to battle the flames overnight, but they could face several fronts.
The area was still unsafe, he said late Saturday night. “The fire is burning in multiple different directions”.

Authorities expanded evacuation orders near a wildfire north of Los Angeles Saturday to include more than 1,000 more homes, after the blaze almost doubled Saturday.
