Two MCHS students names semifinalists for National Merit Scholarships

Detroit Catholic Central High School announced that 97 students earned AP Scholar Awards in 2015, while four students have been named National Merit Semifinalists. More than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Caddo and Bossier Parish Public Schools is home to eight National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists in the 61st annual running of the program.

Kornkven and Riggins have a long list of colleges that they would like to attend, and recieving the National Merit Scholarship will not only make it easier to pay for college, but it also will help them get into some tough schools like UC Berkeley, Standford, Duke, Cornell and Vanderbilt.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2016.

The students’ dedication to excellence and their hard work in preparing for the rigorous academic testing program is to be lauded.

“Scoring in the top one percent of competitors in any endeavor is a tremendous accomplishment”, said Dr. Matt Haas, ACPS Assistant Superintendent of Schools.

Approximately 1.5 million high school juniors from more than 22,000 high schools in the United States enter the program each year by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT exam.

With the rising costs of tuition, scholarships are a major part of most college-bound student’s lives.

The application must include the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

“It is an absolute honor to have a student of this caliber representing Woodstock High School and Cherokee County at such a level”. National Merit Scholarship Corporation will begin announcing the 2016 winners in April.
