Yet another case of senseless gun violence is making headlines, this time because it involved the relative of a prominent athlete (and because of its particularly tragic details): National Basketball Association star Dwyane Wade’s cousin, mother-of-four Nykea Aldridge, was fatally shot on Friday in Chicago – while police say she was on her way to register her kids for school.

A family spokesman says a cousin of Chicago Bulls NBA star Dwayne Wade was fatally shot August 25, while pushing a baby in a stroller on the city’s South Side.
Police say the pair were trying to shoot an Uber driver dropping off passengers from a nearby vehicle Friday afternoon when they accidentally shot Aldridge.
Derren Sorells, 22, and Darwin Sorells, 26, were both charged with one count of first degree murder and one count of attempted first degree murder, according to a statement from Chicago Police. Police said he is a driver for hire who apparently made eye contact with the Sorrells brothers and the brothers fired shots at the man as he ran from them.
The city of 2.7 million has more shootings and murders than any other U.S. city, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation and Chicago police data.
Gun violence is widespread in Chicago, and it appears to be growing. He and his mother, pastor Jolinda Wade, participated Thursday via satellite in a town hall meeting in Chicago on gun violence hosted by ESPN.

Aldridge was one of 67 people shot in Chicago this weekend, 10 of them fatal, according to Jordan Owen of the Chicago Sun-Times.
South Side resident and Grammy-winning rap artist Rhymefest, who was robbed at gunpoint Saturday, waded into the fray when he invited US GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump to visit.
Aldridge’s family held a prayer vigil for her Sunday afternoon at the Willie Mae Morris Empowerment Center.
After a subsequent tweet correcting the spelling of Wade’s name, Trump (or someone on his staff) tweeted a message of condolence.
