Two men killed when twin-engine Cessna crashes at Hammond Airport

Local authorities said the incident was reported before 4 p.m.at the airport off Highway 190.

John Harris was identified as one of the two men killed in the small aircraft crash.

FAA investigators have been called to the scene, and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified, said Lynn Lunsford, a public affairs manager for the federal agency.

The NTSB and a representative from the Cessna’s engine manufacturer are expected on the scene Thursday to try and determine what happened before the crash.

The pilot was returning to the airport after recently taking off. The conversation between the airport and the pilot was brief and ended with the pilot’s screams.

“My initial information indicated that the aircraft was headed for Atlanta”.

According to its website, the Hammond Northshore Regional Airport is the largest general aviation reliever airport on the Northshore.

First responders from a fire station located on the airport property arrived immediately at the scene of the accident, in order to rescue potential survivors and to assess the damage.
