Sterling Heights – A 20-year-old man was arrested early Monday morning after police said he stabbed three of his family members, killing two of them.

A 44-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman also had suffered significant stab wounds, according to a press release.

Police reported that a woman called police at 12:30 a.m. and said her grandson was “out of control” assaulting them.

As the woman spoke to a police dispatcher, commotion could be heard in the background.

According to police, the 20-year-old suspect moved to Sterling Heights two weeks ago from North Carolina to live with his uncle and grandparents.

The two wounded individuals were transported to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, and the man was declared dead at the hospital, according to police. The grandmother is listed in critical but stable condition, Smith said.

“The suspect was cooperative with officers at the scene and we believe him to be the only one responsible for the victims’ injuries”, Smith said.

“He appears to be the only suspect in this incident”, Smith said, indicating that the suspect has no prior criminal history and there is no apparent motive at this time.

“We’re looking at that happening sometime tomorrow (Sept. 1)”, Smith said.

On the morning of August. 31, Mayor Michael Taylor’s Twitter account announced that a “senseless and tragic act of violence occurred overnight” in the city.
