The gunbattle took place when security forces intercepted a pick-up van in Pampore area on the outskirts of Srinagar after specific intelligence input about movement of militants, police and CRPF said.

The naka party at a makeshift drop gate signalled the vehicle to stop but ignoring the officers it halted at a distance opened indiscriminate fire at the patrolling unit, injured two jawans.

However, in the shoot-out two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were also injured.

A senior police officer said police believe the alleged terrorists were planning an attack in the city. “In the brief gunfight that ensued, two terrorists were killed and two AK-47 rifles recovered from the vehicle”, the police official said.

Officials said that on Tuesday evening police and CRPF setup a checking point on the national highway at Pampore and started checking vehicles plying on the national highway.
